My son is walking again. It took 3 full weeks, but he’s up and moving. His fun and loving personality is back too, which I am so thankful for. He climbs all over me, his favorite activity which I almost forgot about. He’s playing and climbing better than ever and we’re having a great summer. We’re moving on to bigger and better!

One Response to “Spica Cast Saga - XXIII - One month Post Cast”

Hi! I just wanted to thank you for your post. It seems we have been along the same path at about the same time with the SAME INJURY!. My son is 3 years old. He broke his leg on June 6. He was slipping around on our hardwood floor in some fuzzy socks and landed “just right” to break the femur (spiral fractur also). I was 5 feet away from him. (I hope that relieves your guilt some. Yes, a break CAN happen from such a little fall & Just because they fall doesn’t mean you were being inattentive, but you already knew that!) Thankfully though, we were at a great hospital and didn’t have the CPS worry. They all believed us but they did ask questions over & over. He just got his cast off on 7/24. After one week of him barely moving his leg, I was wondering how log it would be before he started walking. There isn’t much information out there until I stumbled along your post! Thank you for taking the time to put up the post! It has given me comfort to know that his inability to walk is normal. The doctors evidently didn’t think it was important enough to tell us.
I Wish I had come across your site sooner. I could have shared that we found that using an “adult male urine guard” inside the diaper really kept the accidents down. There is only one brand that worked “Assurance”. It was small enough to tuck into the opening but long enough to go all the way round to the back. Even with that though, the cast got really stinky towards the end. We found that using “Shower to Shower” powder each day in top portion of the cast helped with the smell. We also used a very small box fan (My son called it his “butt” fan) when the cast got wet to try to dry it. We could have shared so many tips & tricks, had I found this sooner! ;0(
Anyway, thank you again. If you’d like to “talk” just send me an e-mail. I don’t check every day but I will respond.
