My 2 year old loves tool toys. We have several tool sets and a huge toy tool bench. His favorite these days is the hammer. Hammers of any size and shape will keep his attention for long periods of time. He will hit anything that resembles a nail, screw, or bolt, or even pretend that anything is a nail. I purchased a cheap plastic croquet set from the toy store which has 2 mallets. He calls them his John Henry hammers. (John Henry is a tall tale about a man who built railroads.) He even sings the John Henry song as he hits the nails and build the railroad. Boys are so funny.
